I have written an article on Madonna about how she is searching for the new 'Material Girl' including how she was a style icon back in the 80s. It mentions how modern pop artists have an 80s influence behind their music. It is mixing the 80s era into the modern era which means the article is suitable for a wide audience as different age groups can relate to it. Women in their 40s will be able to relate to Madonna being their style icon when they were teenagers and the new generation of teenagers will be able to see how modern music and fashions are being influenced by the 80s.
Here is my article;
Strike a pose
Back in the 80s, Madonna was the woman who every girl looked up to and wanted to be. She was a music sensation, a style icon and a film star living the dream. It all started in 1983 when she released Holiday, her first hit record which hit the Billboard chart and since then she has become a world phenomenon. She was a trendsetter, from her lace gloves to the bow in her hair, girls of the 80s just wanted to look like her.
The modern generation seem to be currently expressing the 80s era through fashion and music with Lady Gaga bringing back the 80s. She is the current pop star who reflects the 80s through her crazy hairdos, eccentric make up and leotards. It not only Gaga who brings a hint of this amazing era to the charts, the Black Eyed Peas have released their new album ‘The Beginning’ to which they admit has an 80s influence. The group’s leader and producer Will.I.Am said ‘The 80s was unique. It launched humanity into hyper mode. From then to now we’ve transcended to a totally different culture.’
Madonna, however, doesn’t seem to be bringing the 80s back. Even though Madonna was voted Style icon of the 80s on a recent poll of British females in which she was up against Debbie Harry and Kylie Minogue it seems she wants a new ‘Material Girl’ for the modern generation of teenage girls to look up too. The 52 year old singer launched her teen fashion range last year with designs in collaboration with her daughter Lourdes. Actress/singer Taylor Momsen was the poster girl, however Madonna is now advertising on her website to get fans to vote for who they want to be the new face for her Material Girl clothing line. The message on Madonna’s site reads...
... ‘Living in a material world, we all need material girls. Looking for the hottest girl on the scene. She is never afraid. Hollywood is calling the next girl! ... Wanted: Next big star. She makes her own fashion statement – trendy, but cool, young and hip.’
Madonna in the 80s
Lace gloves, leotards, cone boobs, bright eye shadow, red lipstick, leggings, legwarmers, religious jewellery and bangles. Anything Madonna wore, teenage girls would. Madonna may not be influencing the modern generation to wear these styles however it doesn’t mean other people aren’t.
